主讲人简介：
林光平（Kuan-Pin Lin）教授，美国波特兰州立大学经济系终身教授，厦门大学讲座教授。研究领域覆盖计量经济学、数理经济学、计算经济学等。林光平教授1977年在纽约州立大学石溪分校获经济学博士学位，之前曾于1973－1975年在哈佛大学研习数学研究生课程。1978－1979年，林教授成为哈佛大学的博士后研究员，在著名经济学家、诺贝尔经济学奖得主肯尼斯.J.阿罗教授的指导下，完成了经济系统中决策有效性的研究项目。20世纪80年代以来，林教授曾先后执教于纽约州立大学石溪分校、Reed大学以及中国包括清华大学，厦门大学在内的多所大学，他的著作发表在Econometrics、Economics Letters、Journal of Finance、Journal of Mathematical Economics、Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control、Computation Economics等学术期刊上。近年来，林光平教授致力于大数据计量经济学、云计算、数据挖掘、机器学习等领域，取得了突破性的进展。
报告摘要：
Machines are increasingly doing "intelligent" things. Face recognition algorithms use a large dataset of photos labeled as having a face or not to estimate a function that predicts the presence y of a face from pixels x. This similarity to econometrics raises questions: How do these new empirical tools fit with what we know? As empirical economists, how can we use them? We present a way of thinking about machine learning that gives it its own place in the econometric toolbox.
